Daddy Hassan Kamara, an Ebola survivor from Sierra Leone, was filmed during a visit to the United States on Oct. 3, 2016 in Arlington, Va. During the outbreak, he lost nine members of his family, including his mother, father, two brothers, sister, wife, two sons and stepmother.
Daddy, another survivor, and a government minister were hosted by a USAID-funded project called Advancing Partners & Communities, which works closely with the government of Sierra Leone on post-Ebola healthcare improvement efforts and survivor challenges, and is run by staff from JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc. During the week the delegation met top officials at USAID, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the State Department, along with other organizations involved in responding to the Ebola outbreak.
Later in October a short documentary film I made in Sierra Leone on the post-Ebola healthcare situation will be released, along with interviews of each of the survivors and the country’s Minister of Social Welfare, Gender & Children’s Affairs.
